Disaster in Indonesia
At least 125 people died on Saturday in a mob scene when thousands of fans invaded a football pitch and were sprayed with tear gas in the city of Malang, on the eastern island of Java. "A tragedy beyond imagination," said FIFA president Gianni Infantino. This heavy toll is the result of several ultra-violent clashes between these Indonesian fans. The country's championship is described as "one of the most dangerous in the world" and had already claimed 95 lives between 2005 and 2018. A minute's silence was observed in many European stadiums before Sunday's matches in tribute to the victims.
